This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for time.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
