Comeback Medvedev Claims First Championship in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hardcourt

A resurgent Medvedev won his first title for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a difficult period, managing just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally splitting with former mentor his previous coach.

Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought competitive win over opponent Moutet.

This marks his first title following the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard court from that period of that year.

The win also indicates the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one various competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my both daughters together, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," said world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my child my daughter was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six championship matches, featuring in that event in the past months.

The player's counter-punching strategy and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had prompted commentators to question if his skill to play at the top level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, attempting to come to the net and compete aggressively, backed up by an improved service.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, winning four of the final five exchanges to gain the advantage.

Both players traded break points in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his initial professional championship, seized the initiative to force a final set.

The opponent rescued 4 initial opportunities in a tight third set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev earned the title with a point at the net, with Moutet unable to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
